Booksale opens at KCC

I just saw a Booksale store open in KCC yesterday. Good news for me! Although I have had enough of second hand paperbacks because they don’t seem to have anything else interesting for me and my bookworm hubby.

Good thing that they opened in Gensan and that a lot of people were actually interested in the store. I bought a good recipe book which was quite a price for it’s contents.

I’m still praying for a National Bookstore. *wink*

Enjoy your weekend everybody!

Businesses that are not yet in Gensan

Every now and then, there would be things I find I need which are not yet available in Gensan. Let me say, though, that as it is, Gensan has everything that you need to live comfortably and with a little luxury here and there. However, these suggestions would be a good thing to have in the city and would be great business ventures. Sadly, I don’t have the capital for these dream businesses yet! (and I say yet!) so I will post them here in the hope that somebody would find them and invest in them. Pretty, pretty please…

One of the major things I need would be a weekend destination for children. Yes, we have malls and a couple of swimming pools but after you have lived here a couple of years, you would find those boring already. It would be great to have amusement parks or country clubs or waterparks with a lot of amenities or, dream on, something like SM MOA Discovery Center.

One other thing would be a dance training studio. I love to dance and sing. There are a couple of training schools here for singing but none for dance. (Or maybe I have not discovered it yet?) One that would teach you to dance not just for fitness but to really get to know a certain dance well.

Although we have good restaurants here already, it would be lovely to have a Japanese, Vietnamese, Thai, Korean or real Chinese Dimsum restaurant. European themed restos might not be a hit yet, but I hope the time will come. There is life after barbecue and tola, Generals, remember that.

Other businesses in my wish list:

  • Kids’ salon or spa
  • Wendy’s Restaurant
  • French Baker
  • National Bookstore (with lots and lots of books please!)
  • A city skyline restaurant with a good view
  • A clean-fun bar and/or discotheque
  • Specialty groceries

Restaurant Review 3: Six Blings Ostrich Bar and Restaurant

My husband and I checked Six Blings last night. It’s in the compound of Bigshots Badminton Court. I have not tried their ostrich specialties so we decided to have dinner there.

Of course, I had to order the Ostrich Sizzling Steak. My husband ordered Ostrich Adobo. I found the steak really, really good! It tasted like beef/pork tenderloin. If I didn’t know it was ostrich, I would not have an inkling at all that it was ostrich. The seasonings were non-complicated and the texture was just right. We did not order anything else as I just wanted to try the ostrich steak. I guess we have to go back another time to try the other fares like Dili-Ka guapo, a Haw’s appetizer. Very clever name. You have to go to Six Blings to know what it is.

As for the restaurant itself, I thought it was too bright and felt like I was in my own dining table becauce of the fluorescent lights. The service was good, one of the best I have seen in Gensan. Too bad there were just a few tables occupied that night.

Six Blings has a unique offering being the only restaurant with Ostrich on the menu so they better push it some more.

Is Gensan ready for more malls?

I always hear rumors of one or two malls being built in Gensan in the near future. I personally would love more malls as KCC is starting to be boring and Gaisano needs more organizing here and there for a more pleasureable shopping. Gaisano’s choices though appear to be better and the prices are great too. However, are we ready for more malls? Can the Generals sustain them?

Local and national malls alike are rumored to be inquiring. Not surprising as Gensan is the onlyurbanized city in this area of Mindanao. People from far-flung towns come in trucks or what they call ‘weapon’ to shop or go malling. There are a lot of wealthy people living in far towns who would always want to splurge or simply buy something not found in their local public markets.

However, I think that an additional shopping place would be great on the initial months. It has become somewhat of a trend here in Gensan that, when there is a new establishment, a restaurant for example, it enjoys good business for the first three months. But after that period, it either stagnates or goes downhill. The only difference would be if it’s the only one of its kinds or the products or services are great.

Right now, there are only a few people who wait by the steps of the malls before it opens. If you have seen the crowd before opening time in SM Makati or Davao, you will pity malls in Gensan. On weekdays, except if it’s the Holiday season or days near payday, the malls are not busy at all. I was in Gaisano yesterday and the staff were just chit-chatting.

In my opinion, anothermall would be great if and only if it will offer something else not offered in the existing malls now and if it will be bigger. We tend to commensurate a mall’s worthiness to its size, don’t we?
